Throughout my four years of design school, I was given the gift of a studio space. This space gave me opportunity to collaborate with my classmates and created environment that aided to the pushes and pulls of design. I hope to contribute this mindset to my next studio.

Create Images, Don't Scavenge
In a World...
I had the opportunity to take a experimental typography where each week were given a prompt and had to create something typographic based off the topic. These are some of those projects.

Random Acts of Design
With this project, we were asked weekly to create a random act of design. This particular week, a classmate and I chose to design for our other design peers. We created small tokens that each had a representation of who that person was through a small glyph and its meaning. We wanted to combined both natural and mechanical elements to show that even though we are in a technologically advancing field, its important to know your roots and where you came from.
Random Acts of Design
For this week, I decided that my audience was going to be my mother. She has given up so much and provided me everything, and I wanted to create something that would tell her how much I appreciate her. So I decided to create a package that would tell her how much she meant to me. With a hand written note, picture, and taken aways, I wanted to personalize this package in a way that spoke to her.
This was a semester long project that involved extensive research. We were first given a wicked problem, mine was a statistic about the sugar consumption in the United States. Then through research of the topic, we were asked to create a poster that identified the problem and gave solutions in a digital, environmental, and print format. I found through my research, that much of the sugar we consume is hidden in things that we would never guess, one of those items being condiments. Through my poster, I wanted to shed some light on these hidden sugars and brings awareness to what we are consuming. I decided to present it in a way that made the sauces look sloppy and unappetizing.
Zeus Juice was a semester long branding project, where we were asked to create a product and a company and then brand its contents. I created Zeus Juice which is a beverage company that provides children with a healthier drink alternative in a fun, easy to understand system. The goal of the business is to both educate parents about the needs of their children as well as provide an exciting perspective on nutrition and roles of the daily vitamins and minerals to kids. I decided to combine this message with that of Greek Gods and show the powers behind eating right.
I wanted the design elements of the brand to match the audience. Children. I used bright, bold, and contrasting colors to help me convey my message as well as some traditional greek blues and their tones. I wanted my typeface to include the child element, as well as the greek element. I chose Quicksand as my body text because its rounded edges are easy to read for children and it also carries some greek-like characters. I chose Herakles for the font of my main logo and I chose Gelio Pasteli as my font for the bottles.
My brand consisted of three nutritional drinks for kids. Each one of them having their unique blend of vitamins and minerals. Each flavor was branded towards the powers of the major Greek gods and goddesses. The brand created an easy to understand system for kids to comprehend how important their health and well-being are.
Each flavor had a unique pattern that was presented around the bottle.
Ideally, I want the website to contain a gaming element where children can log on and update their profiles based on physical activity, growth, and development. All of these factors could be used to create a point system where the children can see their progress. There could also be a point system where they can win both virtual and physical prizes for their accomplishments. There would also be elements geared towards the parents of these children. Giving them tips and advice about their children diet as well as the children's development.
For our thesis project, we were asked to take an observation, state an argument, back up your statement through research and development, and create a design solution through your findings. I decided to base thesis topic on the design of sleep. My dad, who has been a pilot for over 30 years, works the night shift. I have seen how this shift has effected him both mentally and physically and wanted to see what findings there were about shift work and sleep. I found that of the 15 million Americans who do work the night shift, none of them fully adjust to this change and its more about finding the right coping mechanisms to deal with it. When looking at how others have dealt with a similar problem I noticed that there was much more emphasis being put on the 24/7 businesses and how they would benefit from well-rested employees. But how do you make sure that those workers are getting that rest and understand the importance of sleep for both work and home? So I created Static, which is a sleep consultant company that would aid to the individual and provide them with the necessary tools and information for this change.
Through my research, I found that an app or website wouldn't be the best solution. There has been research that concluded that our gadgets are actually keeping us up at night. Rather a package that contained all the necessary tools would provide the best results. The kit is designed to effectively make the transition from work to home. So from 3D to flat, the workers could throw it in their carry-on or have it on their nightstand.
When you open up the package you will see that the contents will be divided into print and tangible components. The print component will be presented in the form of a booklet, that will provide the user to an introduction to the package, statistics and facts on shift work, tips that they can use at both work and home, and how Static is here to help. These are some spreads that show the flow of information.
When choosing the tangible components, I wanted to aided to the problems that shift workers face when they do want and need to get sleep. Some of those problems are as simple as light, sound, racing thoughts, and just being comfortable. When it came to light, I decided to package a pair of eye shades, which are essential for transforming their days into nights. For sound, I decided to package two pairs of ear plugs, which will help block out any surrounding distractions. For racing thoughts, I decided to package a bottle of melatonin, which is a natural chemical or brains produce to help us fall asleep, but since shift workers are working against their body's natural circadian rhythms, they don't produce it at the right time. For being comfortable, I decided to package a NASA space blanket. This goes back into how the package can make the transition from work to home. So if they are stuck at the terminal due to weather or mechanic issues, they have all the tools they need to get sleep.
We also see our brand expanding. Right now our main audience focuses on shift workers in aviation. However, many other vital jobs involve working night shifts, such as the medical field, construction, and transportation. Jobs were you want the least amount of mistakes made. We see our brand branching out to a wider audience and really showing the importance of sleep not just for work but their home life as well.
